Calgary Stampede Information
Every July, on the same day that the United States celebrates its independence, the city of Calgary comes alive with the thundering of hooves as hundreds of cowboys and horses fill the downtown streets in a huge parade that goes on for hours.
At its heart, the Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo but it's so much more than that. The 10-day event, which bills itself as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", attracts over one million annual visitors and features one of the world's largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions.
During the Stampede, the whole city gets in on the party — owners of office buildings and storefronts paint them in cowboy themes, residents don western gear and there's more pancake breakfasts and barbecues than you can shake a branding iron at.
