La Batalla Del Vino Information![]() Every year on the 29 June, thousands of locals and a handful of lucky tourists climb a mountain in La Rioja, Spain, then proceed to douse each other in wine. The day is St Peter's Feast Day, though you'd be lucky to find a local who will tell you as much. The event around these parts is known as La Batalla de Vino de Haro — the wine fight.
The wine fight kicks off the night before, on the evening of the 28th. Haro throws a party that brings the whole town out and into her streets, bars and squares — from children to grandparents, it's a multi-generational affair. After a few hours sleep, or none at all if you're that way inclined (the street parties literally go all night), the town heads up a mountain some five kilometres away where the battle commences. During the event participants cover each other in wine, dance to wine soaked bands and kiss wine covered mouths. There are water trucks filled with vino distributing it to water pistols, back mounted spraying devices, buckets or anything else that can temporarily hold, and then dispel the vino tinto. After a few hours the fight descends the mountain and moves into the town, where the only battling is done with traditional dancing and staying upright. So How Do You Get To Do The Wine Fight, La Batalla Del Vino??? |
